Dallam writers shine in National Creative Writing competition

Dallam writers shine in National Creative Writing competition

We are delighted to celebrate the success of two of our talented young writers, Faith Whitear and Silas Raine, who both attend our Creative Writing Club in the school library each Friday.

Both students have recently been recognised for their imaginative storytelling, receiving Talent for Writing certificates for their entries into national competitions. Silas’s story, The Thing Behind the Door, and Faith’s The Star Weaver have been selected for publication in the upcoming Young Writers anthology, Grim Tales – Cursed Kingdoms. Their work will also be preserved in the National Archives of the British Library – a huge honour and something they can be proud of forever.

Mrs Turner, school librarian, said:

“Faith and Silas bring real energy to our Creative Writing Club. Writing really can take you places! We’d love more students to join us on Fridays and discover just where their creativity might take them.”

Take a look at both stories below!

Looking ahead, we are excited to be collaborating with the English department on next year’s John Fielding Prize for Dallam Writers, which will help build even more momentum around reading and writing in school. We are also in contact with the Kendal Rotary Club to give our students opportunities to enter their prestigious annual writing competition.

Congratulations again to Faith and Silas – true examples of our school vision: Belong here. Learn here. Thrive here.

The Thing Behind The Door

The front door opens. I lie awake in bed. The windows are silent as the silhouette of the trees outside casts a monstrous look on the curtains. My bed creaks as I move. Creak, creak. Nervous.

What’s that? Footsteps. Quiet, but not silent. A deathly cold wind rushes into my room. Alarmed! What is this horrible thing climbing the stairs? Terrible claws, horrible teeth, maybe a reanimated skeleton! What does this thing want? Me?

A shadow is downcast under my door. Petrified! The thing is here. My door handle shakes. Click. Clonk. Creak. The front door closes. I’m not awake anymore.

The Star Weaver

Long ago, a blind girl named Lira wove threads of moonlight into tapestries. One night, a fallen star begged her to mend its broken light, as it was only small and was picked on by the bigger, more powerful stars. She spun its glow into a silver cloak and in return, the star gave her sight, but she chose blindness again, for with closed eyes she saw the truth in hearts. To this day, stargazers say shooting stars are Lira’s mended stars, falling to be woven anew by the girl who sees with her soul.
