Governance
Dallam School is part of the South Westmorland Multi Academy Trust (SWMAT).
Academy trusts are set up as charitable companies and so must have Members. Members have a similar role to shareholders of a company limited by shares, and they hold the Trust Board to account for the effective governance of the trust.
We currently have 4 Members, and our Trust Board comprises of 10 Trustees, 2 of which are elected by parents of children at the school. The Board meets on at least a termly basis. It also has several committees with specific responsibilities and Terms of Reference:
- Risk, Audit and Finance
- Safeguarding
- Boarding
- Performance and Evaluation
- Headteacher Appraisal
A number of “ad hoc committees” have also been established to deal with issues such as student discipline, HR matters and appeals.
Trustees have a broad range of skills and experience and undertake regular training. A skills audit is carried out annually.
The Trust Board agrees and monitors the 3-year budget and monitors the performance of our School Improvement Plan. The Board is integral in helping to drive up standards and overall school performance, providing challenge and input to school leaders. Key responsibilities are as set out in the Scheme of Delegation.
We also benefit from the Dallam School Charitable Trust. The Trust owns much of the land and buildings at the Heversham and Milnthorpe sites and provides funding support for key school improvements.
